Mediclinic offers Implanon insertion in Clayton South, as well as implant removal and confidential contraception advice. Choosing contraception is a personal decision. Our practitioners can explain your options so you can choose a method that suits your body, your health and your plans.
Contraception advice
There are many types of contraception. Each has different benefits, side effects and levels of effectiveness. Common options include:
- the contraceptive implant (Implanon)
- the combined pill and the progestogen-only pill
- the contraceptive injection
- the vaginal ring
- condoms, which also help protect against sexually transmitted infections
- emergency contraception
At a contraception appointment, we will ask about your health history, any medicines you take, and what matters most to you. We may check your blood pressure. Then we will talk through the options that may suit you.
Nurse Practitioner Vara Perikala provides family planning services, including contraception advice and pre-conception counselling. You can also see one of our GPs with an interest in women’s health, such as Dr Robina Hanafi.
Implanon insertion in Clayton
Implanon is a small, flexible rod placed just under the skin of the inner upper arm. It slowly releases a hormone that prevents pregnancy. It is a long-acting, reversible method and can stay in place for up to three years. It can be removed sooner if you change your mind.
Like any contraception, the implant has possible side effects. Changes to your bleeding pattern are common. Your practitioner will talk you through the benefits and risks, and check whether the implant is suitable for you.
Book a consultation
We will discuss your options and check the implant is suitable for you. We may talk about the right timing for insertion.
Get the device
Your practitioner will explain how to get the implant before your procedure appointment, which may involve a prescription you fill at a pharmacy.
Insertion
The area is numbed with local anaesthetic. The rod is inserted with a special applicator. This usually takes just a few minutes.
Aftercare
You’ll have a small dressing and bandage. We’ll explain how to care for the area and when the implant starts working.
Implanon removal
When you want the implant removed or replaced, book a removal appointment. The area is numbed with local anaesthetic and the rod is removed through a small cut. A new implant can often be inserted at the same visit if you wish. Let reception know you are booking for Implanon removal so the right amount of time is set aside.
Fees for Implanon insertion and removal
Implanon insertion or removal has a $55 gap fee, plus the consultation fee with its Medicare rebate (Level B or C). Fees may change, so see /fees/ or ask reception.
Mediclinic is a mixed-billing practice. Bulk billing for consultations may be offered at the practitioner’s discretion for some eligible patients.
Sexual health: Contraception does not protect against most sexually transmitted infections, except for condoms. If you would like an STI check, see our sexual health clinic.
