Food plays a big part in how you feel and how you manage your health. Our dietitian in Clayton South, Karen Szeto, consults at Mediclinic on Tuesdays. She can help you make practical changes that fit your life, culture and budget.
A dietitian is a university-qualified health professional who gives advice about food and nutrition. This advice is based on scientific evidence and tailored to your health needs. Dietitians can help with medical conditions as well as general healthy eating.
Why see a dietitian in Clayton?
People often see a dietitian for help with:
- Type 2 diabetes and pre-diabetes. Understanding carbohydrates and planning meals.
- Heart health. Including high cholesterol and high blood pressure.
- Weight management. Realistic, sustainable changes rather than strict diets.
- Digestive problems. Such as irritable bowel syndrome or reflux.
- Food allergies and intolerances. Making sure your diet is still balanced.
- Low iron or other nutrient deficiencies.
- Kidney or liver conditions. Where food choices may need adjusting.
- Eating well at different life stages. Including pregnancy, older age and fussy eating in children.
When you book, let reception know what you’d like help with so they can confirm Karen is the right fit.
What to expect
At your first appointment, Karen will ask about your health, medications, usual eating patterns, lifestyle and goals. She may look at recent blood test results, so bring them if you have copies. Australian Clinical Labs collects pathology onsite at Mediclinic if your GP orders tests.
Together, you’ll work out a plan with practical steps. This might include meal ideas, shopping and label-reading tips, or changes to portion sizes or timing. Follow-up visits help you stay on track and adjust the plan as needed.
Part of your care team
Seeing a dietitian in the same clinic as your GP makes it easier to coordinate your care. Nutrition often goes hand in hand with:
- Chronic disease management, such as diabetes and heart disease care plans
- Heart health and ECGs
- Iron infusions, where diet is part of managing low iron
- Health assessments
If you have a chronic condition and a GP care plan, you may be eligible for Medicare-rebated dietitian visits. Book with your Mediclinic GP to talk about whether a care plan is right for you.
