Your flu vaccine in Clayton

Influenza can make people very unwell, especially young children, older people, pregnant women and people with some medical conditions. A yearly flu vaccine is recommended for everyone aged six months and over.

Ideally, have your vaccine before the peak flu season, which is generally June to September. Vaccines are usually available from autumn. But it’s never too late, as flu can spread all year round.

Who can get a free flu vaccine?

Under the National Immunisation Program, the flu vaccine is free for people at higher risk of serious illness. In general, this includes:

  • children aged six months to under five years
  • pregnant women, at any stage of pregnancy
  • people aged 65 years and over
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged six months and over
  • people aged six months and over with certain medical conditions, such as heart disease, chronic lung conditions, diabetes, kidney disease or a weakened immune system

Eligibility can change from year to year, and state programs sometimes add extra groups. Ask reception or your practitioner to check whether you are eligible. If you are not, you can still have the vaccine for a fee.

Children under nine years having the flu vaccine for the first time need two doses, at least four weeks apart.

Book your appointment

Book online at /book/ or call (03) 9544 1555. Tell us it’s for a vaccination.

Pre-vaccination check

We ask about your health, allergies and any past reactions to vaccines, and make sure you are well enough to be vaccinated.

Vaccination

Your practitioner explains the vaccine and gives the injection.

Wait 15 minutes

Please stay at the clinic for about 15 minutes afterwards so we can watch for any reaction.

Side effects

Most side effects are mild and settle within a day or two. They may include a sore arm, redness at the injection site, tiredness, or a mild fever. Serious reactions are rare. Your practitioner will explain the benefits and risks of each vaccine. If you are worried after a vaccination, call us or seek medical help.

All vaccines are recorded on the Australian Immunisation Register. You can view your record through your Medicare online account via myGov.

Fees

Mediclinic is a mixed-billing practice. Government-funded vaccines are free for eligible people, but a consultation fee may apply. Bulk billing may be offered at the practitioner’s discretion for some eligible patients. Fees may change, so see /fees/ or ask reception.
